llms.txt is a Markdown-formatted text file placed at the root of a website (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that gives large language models a concise summary of the site and links to its most important pages. It complements robots.txt and sitemap.xml by telling AI tools what to read first, rather than what they may crawl.
Websites already have files written for machines. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may and may not access. sitemap.xml lists every URL you want indexed. llms.txt does something different: it offers a short, human-curated reading list for AI systems.

What to put in llms.txt
- An H1 with your brand name.
- A one-paragraph blockquote describing who you are, what you do and where you operate.
- Sections (H2) such as Services, Locations, Resources and Company.
- Under each section, a list of links, each followed by a one-line description.
Keep it short. The value is in the curation. If everything is listed, nothing stands out.
What about llms-full.txt?
Some sites also publish llms-full.txt, a longer file containing the actual text of key pages. It saves AI tools from parsing navigation and layout. It is optional; start with llms.txt and add the full version for your most important service pages.
How to add llms.txt to your site
- Custom or PHP sites: create the file and upload it to the root folder, next to robots.txt.
- WordPress: upload via your hosting file manager, or use an SEO plugin that supports it.
- Check it: visit yoursite.com/llms.txt in a browser and confirm it loads as plain text.
