Short answer
SEO aims to rank a page in search results; GEO aims to have a brand retrieved, quoted and cited inside AI-generated answers. Both depend on crawlable, trusted, well-structured content, so GEO is best treated as a layer on top of good SEO rather than a replacement for it.
For twenty years the goal of search marketing was simple to describe: get your page into the top results. AI assistants have added a second goal. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity a question, the assistant writes its own answer and may cite a handful of sources. Being one of those sources is the aim of generative engine optimisation (GEO).
What stays the same
AI assistants still need to find and trust your content, and most of them lean on traditional search indexes to do it. That means the fundamentals of SEO still apply:
- Pages must be crawlable, fast and indexable.
- Each page needs one clear topic and purpose.
- Authority still comes from being referenced by other credible sites.
- Helpful, original content still beats thin pages written for keywords.
What changes with GEO
| Area | Classic SEO focus | GEO focus |
|---|---|---|
| Success metric | Ranking position and clicks | Mentions and citations inside answers |
| Content shape | Comprehensive pages for a keyword | Short, direct answers that can be quoted accurately |
| Signals | Links, relevance, page experience | Entity clarity, consistent facts, trusted third-party mentions |
| Machine files | robots.txt, sitemap.xml | Adds llms.txt and careful AI-crawler rules |
A practical GEO checklist
- Answer first. Put a 40–60 word answer directly under each question-style heading.
- Define your terms. Use plain “X is…” sentences for every concept you want to be known for.
- Mark it up. Add Organization, Service, FAQPage and Article schema, connected with consistent identifiers.
- Keep facts consistent. Your name, services, locations and contact details should match on your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.
- Publish something original. Your own data, benchmarks or frameworks give AI systems a reason to cite you rather than a competitor.
- Add llms.txt. A short, curated list of your key pages helps AI tools find what matters.
- Measure. Test the same set of buyer prompts every month and record whether you are mentioned, linked or described incorrectly.
So, is GEO replacing SEO?
Not in any way that should change your budget overnight. Organic search still drives a large share of qualified traffic, and AI tools still rely on the web pages that search engines index. The smart move is to upgrade your SEO so every important page is also easy for an AI assistant to understand and quote. FAQs
Is GEO the same as AEO?
They overlap. AEO focuses on being the source of a direct answer, including featured snippets and voice answers. GEO focuses specifically on generative AI systems that write and cite their own answers.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
No. Organic AI answers cannot be bought. Visibility comes from being a clear, trusted and well-structured source.
